Beginners Guide to Affiliate Marketing (Part 1)

Would you like to make money working from home? Of course you would – that way you would not only avoid a stressful commute to work via car/train/bus, etc, but you would be able to choose the hours you worked and have greater freedom – including financially. The fact is, if you have a computer which is connected to the internet, then you can work from anywhere in the world – your home or even a tropical beach. “But how can I actually earn money” you ask……..

What’s stopping you?

Possibly you have been put off setting up a website in an attempt to make money because of the following reasons:

•    You don’t know how to get started
•    You are not a computer programmer
•    You don’t have the money/expertise to set up an online shop
•    You don’t want to invest lots of money in stock to sell via website
•    You don’t want the hassle of dealing with customer support issues
•    Etc, etc, etc……..

The fact is you can make money online without being an expert in web design or programming. You don’t even need any stock. You don’t need to deal with customers. But how will you make money? The answer is Affiliate Marketing – you advertise other companies products/services and earn a % of any sales you refer. Hundreds of thousands of people world-wide earn money this way – and you can join them.

No doubt you’ve heard of price comparison sites such as GoCompare with their Meerkats, etc. When you select your car insurance you leave their website and go to a car insurance provider website, where you can then make a purchase.

So have you ever wondered how sites such as the Meerkats price comparison site make money? They make money by being affiliate marketing websites – they earn a % of every sale they refer. They don’t hold any stock. They don’t communicate with customers, they don’t arrange insurance, etc. They just refer a sale. Thankfully, you can also copy their business model. You can easily set up an affiliate marketing website.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

An affiliate marketing program is a revenue sharing program where an affiliate (you) earn commissions by referring customers to a Merchants website (e.g. www.easyspace.com) .

For example, if you joined the Easyspace affiliate program ( you can sign up as an Easyspace affiliate here), you can access lots of professionally designed  banners and text links – which are unique to you. You can place an Easyspace affiliate banner or text link on your website, blog, etc, so that your site visitors know about our products.

If somebody clicks on your link, goes through to Easyspace.com website and purchases something from us e.g. a domain name or web hosting, etc, then you will earn a commission payment for this.

How to get started:

The first thing you need to do is decide what your affiliate marketing website is going to be about. What sector will you target? I would advise you choose a sector that you are really interested in – that way you will have sufficient knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject. E.g. if you are passionate about Formula 1, then you could make a website about that. Or if you’re interested in handbags then you could create a website all about your favourite hand bags e.g. styles, designers, hand bag shops, history, etc, etc.

Register a domain name

Once you have decided what sector you are going to target e.g. fashion, travel, gadgets, sports, bingo, food, toys, etc the next step you need to take is to register a domain name for your website. If you are a beginner to affiliate marketing then you may want to consider registering a ‘Keyword Rich Domain’ i.e. a name that describes exactly what the website is about. If the name you want is not available, then you can choose a name which has hyphens between the keywords.

For example, if you are passionate about baking chocolate cakes then you may decide to create a website with the domain name www.chocolate-cake-recipes.co.uk (still available to register at time of writing this blog post). Try to choose a name that is memorable, describes your sector and has only 1-3 keywords (e.g. chocolate, cake, recipes). If you can’t get a .com or .co.uk, then don’t worry – there are lots of alternatives such as .org.uk, .info, .co, .uk.com, .me, .eu, etc, etc.

Get web hosting

Once you have decided on which domain name you want,  checked it’s still available and registered it, the next step is to purchase web hosting.

Web hosting is where your web page files are stored on the internet. A Web hosting provider such as Easyspace allows other people to see your website on the World Wide Web.

Easyspace offers a number of different web hosting packages that you can choose from. For more info visit the web hosting section of the Easyspace website.

It is important that you use a trusted, reliable and professional web hosting company, such as Easyspace.com to host your website.

Setup your website

Once you have decided on your domain name and web hosting, the next step is to set up your website. Depending on your expertise, experience and time you have available, there are three main options for this:

1.    Design your website yourself – If you are capable of designing a website e.g. using HTML in Notepad or Dreamweaver software, etc, then this will give you control over the design.

2.    Get somebody else to design it for you – for example, Easyspace offers a web design service that you can use. For a free Easyspace web design consultation, visit the easyspace web design section.

3.    WordPress – This is a content management system (CMS) that enables you, without any technical knowledge to set up a website of your own. It is fairly easy to use and is used by millions of websites world-wide. It uses a template system where users install and can choose between design themes. Themes allow users to change the design and functionality of a WordPress website, while keeping the content the same. There are thousands of design themes on the internet for you to choose from.

If you choose any one of the following Easyspace web hosting packages then they come with a ‘1-Click install’ of WordPress:  StarterPlus Hosting, Business Hosting and Pic’n’Mix Hosting. WordPress will enable you to quickly get your website set up e.g. with a blog, contact us page, home page, etc.

wordpress

Once you have your domain registered, web hosting in place, and web site designed and live – which with Easyspace can all be done in only a matter of hours – the next step is for you to add content and affiliate links to relevant online shops in your sector, into your website. It is important that you regularly update your affiliate site, so as to encourage Google to increase your websites page ranking towards to the top spot.

If you have completed the above steps then you are on your way to earning money online.

.xxx domain name – protect your brand now before it’s too late!

.xxx sunrise a.xxx domain surnrise B

October 28th, 2011 will mark the official end of the Sunrise A and B period of the new .xxx domain. During these phases both adult and non-adult companies can apply for .xxx domain names before the general release in December.

The new extension was initially proposed by ICM Registry in 2000 and then approved in 2005, overturned in 2006 and once again reconsidered in 2007! The .xxx “red-light district” for the Internet has been one of the most talked about domain extensions in history.

Immediately after the approval in 2005, the FRC (Family Research Council), launched a campaign against .xxx web address believing that the new domain would allow pornography to “expand their evil empires on the internet”.

With the ICANN board of directors becoming concerned that the new extensions might make ICANN responsible for enforcing laws and regulations over Internet porn, the .xxx extension was yet again rejected in 2006. However, thanks to strong supporters of the domain it was then brought it back for reconsideration in 2007 and again in 2010.

So, after decade-long battle .xxx was officially approved for use by ICANN, (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number) with the proviso that only websites that contain adult content or have adult themes can publish using the .xxx domain name.

After the sunrise period closes, the ICM registry will launch a second phase – Landrush. Starting on 8th November 2011 Landrush allows adult businesses premium access to the remaining names; with General Availability launch on 6th December, the period when the .xxx extension will officially become available to all.

10 days after the launch of the Sunrise period, the first site with dot-xxx, casting.xxx was launched. Even though the site had not been optimised for search engines (SEO) 10 days after the launch, the site had received more traffic than sex.com, which was purchased for $13 million late 2010.

Since the launch of the first .xxx domain name, the ICM registry has approved over 1,000 websites with the .xxx extension.

As of early October 2011, ICM have sold around nine premium .xxx domains with the top sale of gay.xxx for $500,000. This domain was purchased by world’s leading gay production studios – Corbin Fisher, even though the top-level domain name hasn’t been launched yet!

The next .xxx web addresses can be purchased via the T.R.A.F.F.I.C. Conference a live domain auction, which is held in Florida late October 2011. Interested parties will be able to purchase names such as stars.xxx, blondes.xxx, party.xxx, local.xxx, juicy.xxx, hotties.xxx, movies.xxx, singles.xxx, personals.xxx, chatroom.xxx, orgy.xxx, virtual.xxx some of which are set at $0 reserve price.

The ICM Registry have been cautious about cyber squatters and has reserved a list of .xxx domains that include – celebrity names includes musicians, actors, politicians, journalists and even tv presenters. The reserved list also includes “the dead and the living” web addresses.

The next stage in .xxx launch will be the Landrush period and we urge both members and non-members of the adult entertainment industries to secure their brand name. This is particularly important during the Sunrise period, because we expect that .xxx domain names will sell quickly during this phase.

So, have you thought about protecting your brand against the potential abuse? If not, we strongly advise you to think about it now before it’s too late.

For details info about .xxx domain phases visit Easyspace.com or call Easyspace sales team on 0370 755 5088.

Backing up your website

website backup and restore

So you’ve finally sorted out that website for your business. You’ve chosen the perfect domain name, created (or hired someone else to create) the perfect design and now its online and ready for customers. A lot of work has gone into it and you have it all backed up just in case something should go wrong…don’t you?

Backing up your website regularly is incredibly important. For a start, think of all the time, planning and money that went into getting it online in the first place. Every image was chosen for a reason, hours of thought and effort went into every passage of text. Not to mention the stressful task of planning, designing and re-designing your layout over and over again. How much would it cost you to do that all over again? Can you even remember exactly where and how everything was? Chances are you can’t, particularly if your site has been up and running for a while.

There are numerous reasons why your site should be backed up regularly; and preferably in more than one location. All of these reasons are different but all could cause equal devastation to your website, your business and your revenue. Here are just a couple of the most common occurrences which could be disastrous without a back up.

  • It’s all too easy to accidentally hit delete, particularly when more than one person has access to your control panel. Can you imagine clicking the wrong button and inadvertently deleting your entire site? Your content, contacts, orders…all gone. Rebuilding it all would be a nightmare, very expensive and damaging to your reputation if and when orders are not fulfilled.
  • In this day and age, website content tends to be updated quite regularly. Keeping your back ups up to date will make this process a lot easier and ensure that you can restore the most recent version of the site with minimal disruption. If, for example, your site contains a forum or discussion board, your members won’t be too please after some planned updates that all of their posts, photos etc are gone. Another potentially catastrophic event!

Basically, what it comes down to is that you and your business are risking a lot by not backing up your site. Think again about how much time, effort and money would be involved in rebuilding everything from scratch. It’s almost certainly a lot easier and cheaper to back it up.

The next question is how? Luckily, as well as being incredibly important, creating a backup is incredibly easy. All you need to do is access your control panel, enable backups and select the most appropriate option. Simple!

If you’re still unsure about why or how to backup your website, give us a call on 0370 755 5088 and we will be more than willing to help you out.

From .com to .brand – the web is changing…

dot-brand domain name

ICANN, The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, has recently voted YES for the most dramatic change to the Internet’s addressing system; the creation of the “new TLDs”. These new Top Level Domains will permit internet users to create hundreds of their own domain name extensions.

The new expansion of the web addresses will allow businesses, organisations and companies to turn their own brand name into new domain extensions. It is expected that applicants will apply for targeted strings such as .sco (Scotland), .coke, .google etc. There are already interested parties who have shown interest in establishing city-based domains strings such as .paris, .nyc and .berlin.

ICANN is expecting between 300 and 1,000 applications for these new TLDs, providing an alternative to existing TLDs such as .com, .co.uk, .net etc.

A term being used for the new TLDs is ‘dot-brand’, we think you will be hearing this term much more in the coming months!

The creation of the new ‘dot-brand’ extension will not come cheap. ICANN applications fee of $185,000 for securing the new TLD’s with $25,000 annual maintenance fee will be affordable for applicants with large marketing budgets.

Applicants seeking one of the new gTLDs will have to meet high technical standards and have a legitimate claim to the name they will be applying for. ICANN will start accepting applications for these new domain extensions on 12th January 2012 through to 12th April 2012.

The approval process could take anything from 9 to 20 months, with the first new ‘dot-brand’ TLD’s being launched early 2013. Owning the specific dot-brand web address will give businesses and companies full control of their brand identity online and will improve the end-user perception.

The 12th January 2012 will be marked as the biggest change to the system of Internet addresses since its official creation in 1984.
